Add a new device

This article explains how to add and connect a new device to a site.

Overview

Adding a device connects your cameras or recording systems to a specific site, allowing Watchful to monitor events, send alerts, and enable automation through Quill.

Before you begin

Make sure:

  • The customer and site have already been created.

  • You have the required device credentials and server connection details (for example, NX Witness, Cloud VMS, or NVR information).

Steps

1. Open the Add Device page

  1. From the Dashboard, go to the top-left menu and select Sites.

  2. Select the site you want to add a device to.

  3. Open the Devices tab.

  4. Click Add New Device, then select Add Device to open the device setup screen.

2. Complete Device Details

On the first panel:

  1. Enter a Device Name (for example, Front Camera).

  2. (Optional) Add a Serial Number.

  3. (Optional) Add a Description.

    • We recommend using the same text as the device name to help monitoring agents identify the device quickly.

3. Complete the Location section

  1. Select the Customer.

  2. Select the Site this device belongs to.

  3. Enter the Address & Location by typing an address.

  4. Confirm the pin drops in the correct position on the map.

4. Configure Connection Settings

In the Connection Settings panel:

  1. Choose the Device Type:

    • Cloud VMS – Use this to connect devices managed through a cloud video management system.

    • NVR/Camera – Use this to connect physical NVRs or cameras directly.

    • Speaker/Horn – Use this to connect audio devices.

    • Relay – Use this to connect devices that trigger control operations.

  2. Select the Device Model from the dropdown.

    • For example, choose NX Witness if connecting a Cloud VMS system.

  3. Under Server, select the correct server for your region or customer setup.

  4. Click Connect.

    • When successful, you’ll see a confirmation that the device is connected.

5. Confirm Device and Connect

At the bottom of the page:

  1. Review the list of cameras detected from the connected device.

  2. Review all fields in the Confirm Device section.

    • If fields are missing, the system will show Form Incomplete.

  3. When all required information is entered, click Save Device.

You will see a confirmation message once the device is saved successfully.

Result

Your new device is now connected to the selected site.

You can view and manage its cameras, adjust settings, and start receiving monitoring alerts.
