False Alert Workflow

Edited

Overview

The False Alert Workflow helps you close alerts where no person or moving vehicle is present. It also allows you to provide feedback that improves Watchful’s system accuracy over time.

This article explains the different types of false alerts, how to use the dispositions available, and when to request grid updates, maintenance, or suppressions.

When this workflow is used

You will enter the False Alert Workflow when:

  • You select No to “Is there a person or a vehicle?”

  • Quill identifies a non-threat trigger

  • Activity is caused by environmental movement, camera issues, or incorrect detection

This workflow helps you close out non-threat alerts quickly while giving administrators the information they need to improve the site.

Types of false alarms

False alerts are grouped into two main categories:

1. Environmental or harmless triggers

These alerts occur when there is no person or moving vehicle and the motion was caused by:

  • Weather (wind, rain, reflections)

  • Insects

  • Animals

  • Trees or shadows

  • Light changes

You can dismiss these alerts using the appropriate disposition.

2. System issues

System-related false alerts appear when something in the detection or camera setup needs adjustment.

These are divided into three dispositions:

  • Incorrect Motion Grid

Motion grid needs adjusting because movement outside the intended area triggered the alert.

  • Request Service

Camera needs physical maintenance (dirty lens, misaligned, out of focus).

  • Incorrect Detection

System misidentified an object (e.g., tree, shadow).

This also lets you apply suppressions to help prevent similar alerts.

How your feedback improves accuracy

Your false-alert classifications help reduce future noise by informing:

  • Administrators

    • Grid updates

    • Camera maintenance

    • Proper placement or repositioning

  • Watchful’s detection system

    • Improved pattern recognition

    • Reduced false positives

    • More accurate alert routing

Every submission contributes to a cleaner, more reliable monitoring experience.

Result

Using the False Alert Workflow correctly keeps alerts clean, reduces future noise, and improves overall system accuracy.
